Directly from the Driving section of the Nanaimo Daily News, Alan McPhee gives a fantastic review of the 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara: "Over the last ten years, the tough, compact SUV segment of the market has undergone a sea change as manufactureres have 'softened' their rides with unibody contruction and gentler All-Wheel Drive systems. But the Suzuki Grand Vitara continues to provide authentic off-road performance with a true 4WD system that incorporates a transfer case with Low Range capabilites. This is the key advantage that the Grand Vitara has over vehicles like the HOnda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. Suzuki manages to span the rugged SUV - comfortable CUV divide by using unibody construction to ensure a comfortable car-like ride but with the addition of a ladder-type frame to strengthen the underbody for better off-road capability and towing capacity. And towing is an important factor for many compact SUV owners. The Grand Vitara offers the best-in-class towing capacity of up to 1,360 kg (3000 lbs), plus it has a Neutral mode that allows it to be flat-towed safely without adding kilometers to the odometer, ideal for Snowbirds headed south. For 2011, the Grand Vitara is available in three versions - JX, JLX and JLX-L (for Leather seating) powered by a 2.4-Litre, 166 horsepower, 4-cylinder engine with sequential, multi-point fuel injection and a 4-speed Automatic transmission. A quick look at the specifications shows that all three models are extremely well equipped with the base JX starting at $28,135. All models feature the 4WD system with 4H, 4H Lock, 4L Lock (low range) and Neutral (for flat-towing). A simple dial ont he centre console lets you dial in' the mode you want. In 4H, power is directed mainly to the rear wheels for optimum fuel economy. On slippery or loose surfaces you may want to select 4H Lock, which divides the power equally to front, and rear wheels. For serious rock crawling or off-road conditions, 4L-Lock engages the lower gear set to multiply torque and give you that extra grunt needed in the toughest conditions. Our tester was the JLX-L finished in Charcoal Grey with Black Leather seating. Longer, wider and not as tall as its predecessor, the Grand Vitara has cleaner lines and a more commanding presence on the road. The simple lattice grille is flanked by multi-reflector headlights with projector-style Halogen lamps. The lower front fascia has a matching air intake with inset fog lamps sited on each side (except the JX model)." |
